MNR 9-29-25 Talking Points

Mark Room and tacking under a boat. This was all done legitimately but Nimbus felt he had been wronged when Sharqi tacked underneath him outside of the zone and then established overlap at three boat lengths. Nimbus did not think that Sharqi could make the mark so did not give room. The discussion was heated but looking at the drone footage after the race we saw that Nimbus did not have to alter course at the tack. Nimbus proceeded to bear down on Sharqi, committing a foul. Penalty turns. Once the three minute whistle happens, everyone is racing even if the final whistle hasn’t blown and a boat hasn’t crossed the start line. If you foul someone at that point you must do a penalty turn. Diablo did that but I am not sure if other people fouled and did not.

Jib trim:

  • Upwind: Trimmers need to have eyes on the jib when tacking/jibing. A backwinded jib causes you to heave-to effectively stopping your boat in the water. This is a huge problem on the starting line and when approaching a mark.
  • Downwind:
Broad Reach: Trimmers ease and trim the jib as needed to keep it full.
Running/Sailing by the lee: Best practice is to push the clue out and slightly down. Emulate the trimming work seen in this photo: https://photos.app.goo.gl/vw9QhFCDUjJFHgVu6 because holding the clew of the jib makes you look clueless!
