Sunday Night Races 5-25-25
The proverb “We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails” hit home tonight as the wind shifted almost 180° on the way to the windward mark. I was beyond frustrated and started to have a meltdown until, with the help of my daughter, I realized this was a situation where I had to embrace change in order to change course. This was not the first time I have had to change course nor will it be the last: Doing nothing is not an option.
The takeaways from tonight:
- Expect the Unexpected: The upwind leg became a downwind leg and the boats that adjusted their sail trim to a downwind point of sail first did the best.
- Sail to where the wind is: The wind was fickle so it was important to look for the wind on the water and sail towards it. Boats that caught the breeze sailed right passed those that did not.
- Be Prepared: Rig for the reef before leaving the dock. Always. If that wind shift had happened due to a surprise T-Storm some of you would have been caught with a full sail.
