What I thought was going to be a post race chalk talk about sailing close hauled and knowing where the marks are, turned into “how to” about when a shroud or stay breaks.
If a shroud or stay snaps, becomes unpinned or is otherwise compromised immediately position the boat so that the stay in question is unloaded.
If the port shroud lets go then tack onto starboard.
If the forestay becomes unpinned turn down to a run.
If the backstay pops then sheet the main on hard and turn up wind.
Next, lower a sail – usually the jib – so you can use it’s halyard to replace the broken shroud or stay.
Once the mast is secure, limp in under sail or call to get towed in.
Remember, you can always anchor and call the school for help if you can’t sail all the way into the basin.
