Here are some pictures and race track from our trip to Thomas Point. We actually made it and back to the finish line without major towing heroics. This one was more about the journey than the race, but there were still some takeaways.
1) Get the jib in tight (touching the shrouds) and sail to the tell tales. Tighten the vang and play the mainsail to keep your angle of heel level. The conditions warranted a full main last night with no issues until we were beating back up the Severn. Then you needed the main out of the cleat and being constantly played in and out. The boats that could sail to their tell tales just lifted off the rest of the fleet.
2) Tack on the shifts. Nimbus was in the lead for most of the night. Sharqi actually passed them by Lake Ogleton when the got a huge lift and Nimbus got headed. Sharqi gave it away though when they got headed and didn’t immediately tack onto the new favored tack and continued sailing on the headed tack. In conditions like we had last night the tacks don’t cost much, especially if you do them well. Stay on the lifted tack.
