We dusted off the cobwebs and had a nice start to the racing season. Some KBC members gathered missing safety equipment for their boat while others learned that a tight boom topping lift creates a twist in the mainsail that won’t let the boat head up! Three strategies were identified to keep working on:
- Lead with the mainsail to help the boat turn faster and upwind, closer to the wind. The less movement your rudder makes, the faster you will sail.
- Don’t follow the leader! If you are behind, split away from the fleet because you won’t catch many boats by following them.
- The boom topping lift must be slack once the sail is up.
