Basic Seamanship
Saturday January 21, 2012
9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

This course includes an introduction to Boat Handling Theory, Deck General, And Basic Marlin-spike skills. Basic Boat Handling Theory will consist of explanations of scenarios in docking and tight quarters maneuvering, such as warping or springing, backing in a straight line, fender use and utilization, and maneuvering into and away from the dock. Deck General will supply you with fundamental knowledge of basic line handling, winch operation, safely going aloft, and deck awareness. The Marlin-spike discussion will involve different types of line and their uses, types of line construction and knots: where and how to tie them.
First Mate Skills

This course will cover safety equipment that should be aboard the vessel and parts of the boat to check before getting underway. Next we will provide an in-depth discussion on how to assist with leaving and approaching the dock. Followed by finding out where you are on the charts so you can get help in an emergency and the proper use of the VHF radio. You will also learn emergency operation of the boat, anchor types and how to use them, how to run the boat, hook up to a tow, or get the boat to a dock.
Piloting Basics

$75.00
This course will touch on all basic navigation theories and techniques.
We will be covering chart reading, using the scale, soundings, colors, channel markers, the compass rose, waypoints, distance, compass course, and determining position in lat/long. We will also cover triangulation, set and drift, speed vs. time, and distance. Additionally, we will cover all basic chart reading skills, the U.S. buoyage system, and relating paper charts to chart plotters.
